This week, we are thrilled to share an insight piece from our GenAI Collective NYC Chapter Leads, Prithvi Rajasekaran and Sri Ramakrishnan, who dive deeper into the growing NYC AI ecosystem and why they’re excited to challenge the Bay Area’s AI dominance!
NYC’s Burgeoning AI Scene
In 2024, New York's AI community has experienced a remarkable transformation, and the GenAI Collective has been at the heart of it. As ex-Californians who felt the FOMO of not being in San Francisco’s Cerebral Valley, we realized that many in NYC shared the same feeling of disconnectedness from the broader tech scene. We launched GenAI Collective NYC earlier this year to bridge that gap, and what started as a small initiative has quickly grown into a thriving hub for AI enthusiasts, practitioners, and researchers.
As we’ve grown the GenAI Collective, we've been fortunate to see firsthand how vibrant and diverse New York’s AI scene truly is. Along the way, we've organized events that have highlighted the city's unique strengths and addressed the needs of its AI community. A recent highlight was our panel at The Room Podcast’s Inside Summit, which gave us the opportunity to sit down with the founders of Dynamo AI, Tavus & Multimodal and dive deep into what it takes to build a sustainable B2B AI business. The discussions revealed not only the challenges of the AI startup journey but also the wealth of entrepreneurial talent in the city.

We also partnered with AWS to host a workshop focused on fine-tuning open-source models. This session reinforced our belief that New York’s AI community is not just about ideas but about applying those ideas in meaningful, practical ways. Similarly, our AI Executive Dinners provided a space for leaders across industries to share their experiences with AI implementation, helping us understand the real-world impact—and sometimes the challenges—of integrating AI into established businesses.

Perhaps one of our most enlightening experiences has been organizing the ongoing research roundtables. We initially set these up to showcase local talent, but they quickly became a powerful reminder that New York has a thriving, deeply technical research community. These roundtables have taught us that the city is far more technically adept than many assume, challenging the old stereotype that "New York isn’t that technical." Through these events, we've seen how important it is to foster connections between different parts of the AI ecosystem—whether they're researchers, founders, or operators—and how much potential there for powerful innovation when these groups come together.

New York City: A Proving Ground for AI’s Promise
If AI is to achieve its transformative potential, it needs a proving ground — a place where its capabilities can be tested across a wide range of real-world scenarios. New York City, with its unparalleled diversity in population and industry, offers exactly that.
Unlike the tech-centric environments of Silicon Valley or Seattle, New York City’s economy is a tapestry of interconnected industries. Finance, media, real estate, healthcare, fashion, and international trade all coexist here, creating a complex ecosystem where AI can be applied in a myriad of ways. The city is home to more S&P 500 headquarters than any other in the United States, boasting 43 HQs among companies on this list. This concentration (and diversity!) of industries makes NYC uniquely positioned to explore AI’s generalizability and scalability.
This pragmatic approach aligns well with New York's broader ethos. In a city where results matter more than hype, AI initiatives are evaluated based on their ability to deliver real-world impact. This focus on practicality is reflected in recent investment trends. Notable companies such as Captions, K Health, and Qloo have emerged, reflecting the city's diverse and thriving startup ecosystem across industries including AI, healthcare, entertainment, and data analytics.
Silicon Alley: A Growing Rival to Silicon Valley
New York’s tech scene, often dubbed "Silicon Alley," is rapidly emerging as a serious competitor to Silicon Valley. The growth of tech hubs in neighborhoods like Flatiron, Union Square, Soho, and Dumbo is testament to the city’s rising influence in the tech world. While Silicon Valley remains the epicenter of tech innovation, New York’s unique blend of industries and its focus on practical, real-world applications give it a competitive edge.
Venture capital trends further underscore this shift. While Silicon Valley continues to attract significant investment, New York is not far behind, with a growing share of venture capital flowing into its tech ecosystem. In June 2024, NYC tech startups raised over $2.3 billion, marking one of the strongest months for startup funding in the city's history and accounting for nearly a third of early-stage funding nationally. Throughout 2023, NYC secured approximately $15.2 billion in total funding, spanning all stages from Seed to Growth. This investment is increasingly directed toward startups that are developing AI solutions for the city’s diverse range of industries, from finance to government tech to healthcare.
The NYC Advantage
New York City’s complex and diverse ecosystem makes it the ultimate test for AI’s real-world applicability. If AI can thrive here — across multiple industries and in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders — it proves the technology’s potential as a viable tool for global transformation.
The success of AI in NYC will not only validate its potential but also set the stage for broader, more impactful use of AI worldwide. Like the age old saying goes, if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. We’re excited to see how the field of AI responds to that challenge and NYC continues to drive global innovation.
