It’s Monday, November 17th: This week, two of the world’s biggest AI players make landmark infrastructure moves: Anthropic commits $50B to US data centers, and Microsoft puts $10B into a new sovereign compute hub in Portugal.

Head over to our Luma page to get the latest on upcoming AI Collective events near you. Search by city, date, or event format, and join thousands of builders at events across 100+ chapters on every continent (except Antarctica, for now).

🗞️ This Week’s AI News Roundup

The AI news you need to know: weekly 🤝 by AJ Green

1️⃣ Anthropic commits $50B to US-based AI data centers

News: Anthropic is building out America’s next-generation compute infrastructure. With $50 billion allocated to data centers in Texas and New York, the company is positioning itself as a long-term force in AI infrastructure, not just model development.

Details:

  • Sites designed in partnership with Fluidstack to support frontier-scale performance

  • Phase one begins in 2026, creating over 3,000 jobs across build and operations

  • Reinforces Anthropic’s vertical strategy: own compute, models, and deployment

  • Aligned with national priorities for AI resilience and domestic innovation

Why it matters: AI progress increasingly depends on access to compute. Anthropic’s move reframes the race — from parameter counts to data center capacity. One thing is clear: AI development is shifting from a technical race to a sovereignty issue, signaling that American AI leadership must be built not only on innovation, but on energy, land, and hardware ownership.

2️⃣ Microsoft bets big on Portugal with $10B AI hub

News: Microsoft is investing $10 billion to develop a major AI and cloud data center campus in Sines, Portugal — one of its most ambitious infrastructure efforts in Europe, aimed at accelerating AI operations, supporting regional innovation, and powering sovereign compute across the continent.

Details:

  • The hub will be built in partnership with Start Campus and British AI cloud provider Nscale, tapping into Portugal’s strategic coastal position

  • Initial deployment includes 12,600 next-gen Nvidia GPUs, scheduled to go live in early 2026

  • Project leverages renewable energy, transatlantic cables, and Portugal’s pro-tech regulatory landscape

  • Part of Microsoft’s larger $30B+ European expansion, alongside efforts in the UK, Switzerland, and Germany

Why it matters: Europe is emerging as a serious contender in the global AI infrastructure race. With this move, Microsoft is transforming Portugal into a strategic AI nerve center, reinforcing the shift toward sovereign AI capacity and sustainable compute. The investment will empower local economies, unlock cross-border innovation, and ensure Europe isn’t left behind in the next chapter of AI. My Take: Sovereign compute is quickly becoming the next leg of the AI arms race, and whoever controls GPU access defines the playing field.

🧭 Scaling Intelligence: Distributed RL Meets Generative Perception

Scaling Intelligence brings together Devvrit Khatri, Massimiliano Viola, and Pushpendre Rastogi for a focused session on distributed reinforcement learning, diffusion-guided perception, and multi-objective control. Co-hosted with Chemistry VC, the format will be tight with critical reading and open discussion.

Predictable RL compute scaling, diffusion models for zero-shot generalization, and strategies for balancing performance, reliability, and latency in production environments will be the focus of this engaging session. The salon is designed for researchers and practitioners who want an active exchange across RL, diffusion, and agent design.

Seating is limited to maintain an interactive format. Please RSVP if you plan to join.

Join the session to take part in a technical, research-driven discussion on scalable intelligence. 🧪

🍀 Welcoming The AI Collective to Dublin

The AI Collective is officially in Dublin, joining one of Europe’s most dynamic tech corridors with a community built to learn, build, and collaborate together. The launch event gathers founders, researchers, engineers, and operators across Ireland’s growing AI ecosystem for an evening of conversation and connection at Kennedy’s Pub.

The focus of the night is simple: bring the people shaping Ireland’s next wave of AI work into the same room. Expect a relaxed mixer format, early discussions about the chapter’s direction, and a first look at upcoming programs across the country. Drinks are covered, and the goal is to set the foundation for ongoing meetups, hackathons, workshops, and community-led demos.

Attendance is approval-based to keep the format intimate. If you don’t receive a spot this time, more Dublin events are already in motion.

RSVP for the Dublin launch and help shape Ireland’s newest AI Collective chapter.
