When the Collective started in 2023, shortly after the release of GPT-3.5, AI was everywhere. My friends and I spent most nights in our living room, talking about what was happening and what might come next. We wondered whether others like us were having similar conversations.

What began as a few, humble gatherings in the Bay Area has turned into the largest grassroots AI community on the planet. In just two years, we’ve brought together more than 70,000 builders, researchers, founders, activists, and policy thinkers across 25 cities and three continents.

AI is moving faster than our world can keep up. It’s reshaping our institutions, economies, and daily life with growing speed and reach. From the beginning, we believed that the future of this technology should not be decided behind closed doors.
