Annie grew up in Australia and started on the most traditional path imaginable. She landed a data science role at a bank, and here is the detail that explains everything that came later: she had no coding experience. She taught herself Python on the job, figured it out in real time, and kept moving. It is the same adaptability that would define her entire career, and it turns out to be one of the most valuable skills anyone can have: the willingness to learn the thing you need right when you need it.

Then came the corporate rite of passage. She went into consulting and it burned her out. What it left behind was clarity. After ChatGPT launched and the AI field began to bloom, she moved toward the frontier, into startups and venture capital, close to the founders actually building the future. Somewhere in that stretch, without quite planning it, she had become the exact person Build Club would later be built for: someone who arrived non-technical, learned by doing, and discovered she could make real things.

In the early days, Build Club was technical only. You needed a GitHub account to get in. Then AI tooling democratized, the barrier to building collapsed, and Annie made a decision that reshaped the whole community: open it up. The thesis now is simple and radical at once. Anyone can build, the same position The AI Collective has. All it takes is a willingness to learn and a willingness to give back.

The deliberate choice underneath that thesis: Build Club is not tied to any single tool or any one learning path. Most communities organize themselves around a product. Annie refused to, on purpose, because she wanted the community to outlast any single tool. The north star is the people, not the platform.

She thinks about her community in specifics rather than slogans. Two kinds of people tend to lead local chapters: founders building in isolation who need others around them, and AI engineers and consultants who need to stay current in a field that reinvents itself monthly. Both types share the same need, a room where building is the default activity, not a networking event with a demo tacked on.

Annie started Build Club in Australia, and that origin shaped everything. The hunger to build local AI capability outside the usual hubs is enormous, and so is the skepticism. She saw both firsthand before expanding into APAC and beyond. Build Club meets people where they are, because it was never designed from inside a bubble.

The pattern is Annie's fingerprint all over again. She is not building a stage. She is building the infrastructure that lets other people do their best work.The near-term focus is not flashier events. It is deeper infrastructure: better ways for members to actually find and help each other, and a wider circle of sponsors and collaborators so the value flowing through the community keeps growing.

Build Club takes a different path than the market, where many startups are investing in agents. Instead, Build Club empowers people in the AI age and provides individuals and companies the infrastructure and education they need to stay competitive in the AI world.

She has watched the AI landscape shift underneath her twice already, in less than two years, from Codeium-era tooling to full autonomy, and the one constant is that the people who build alongside other people build better.

That is a striking thing to build a company on in 2026, when so much of the industry is racing to replace human steps rather than strengthen human ones. Annie is doing the harder, less glamorous thing. She is building the thing she needed when she was teaching herself Python at a bank and had nobody to build alongside.

Annie Liao is proof that you do not have to be the loudest person in the room to build one of the most important ones. She learned to build with her own hands, then spent years making sure other people could too, and she did it by keeping humans, not tools, at the center.

Ten thousand members later, the room she built is still growing. And she is still not the one holding it. She is somewhere in the back, building the next one.
